![]() They want to know how fast youtube will buffer HD video. They want to know how fast their movie will download. They want to know how fast their game will download. No one cares what their hypothetical-on-paper-speed is. But you know what will never lie to you? The active and live application of your internet connection via everyday normal tasks- because this is the only thing that matters to anyone. Speed tests will lie to you, or at the very minimum obfuscate the truth. On a bad day it could be in the 5-10mbps range On a good day I average around 20-25mbps download I fucking wish my internet was that fast. I'm not sure what kind of "downloading" these speed tests think they are doing, but I definitely don't get 150mbps like they all tell me I do. I have never seen more than 25mbps download speeds on my computer, downloading from any source. Personally, I use steam to measure my internet speeds, because it is reliably consistent, and is an actually relevant, and real world application of my my internet, and thus an accurate measurement for my effective speed. If you download a lot of videogames use steam to measure it during a videogame download. ![]() If you are a person who downloads a lot of files off of google chrome, take note of the download speeds chrome is giving you, or use the task manager to measure it. I think the only proper and accurate way to test your EFFECTIVE internet speed, is to measure it using your normal everyday tasks. If this were true my 500MB - 1GB video uploads would happen in about 10-30 seconds, not 10 minutes. I tried 3 different speed tests that gave me numbers ranging from 140-180 mbps down, and 50-60 mbps up.Īgain, if this were true, a 50GB game download should take less than 10 minutes, not the 1-2 hours that it actually takes. This isn't some margin of error, or minimal variance, it's a massive, massive, variance, between the "measured" speeds, and the actual functional speeds. My video game downloads would take a few minutes not a few hours. If they were even vaguely true, my youtube uploads would take 10 seconds, not 10 minutes. So who for live streaming purposes which site is the most accurate to base your planning around? I know they all use different methods to get your speeds so is most comparable to a Live Stream Upload? Is there a better one I missed? D=Download U=Upload all numbers are Mbps.Ĥ19D 218u (I got better numbers when I tested directly to my ISP servers but I switched to another server and got these) So after the call I went down the speed test rabbithole and ran a bunch of tests and got a WIDE array of results. 12mbps! I realized I was being throttled later because I am backing up a lot of Hard Drives to the cloud on another unit so I paused that and tried again and still was only getting around 30Mbps. The site she had me use was which the first time showed an upload of speed. But then the results came in and I almost pooped! While the speed test was going I was thinking, what's the point of this, I have 1000 down 250 up (Residential address and fibre). The agent had me run a speed test on my upload. I was on with tech support yesterday figuring something out.
